YC Scoop

in 2019, our school began to publish a school magazine. i volunteered to be one of the editors for it as i wanted to experience what it’s like to work behind the scenes. this was also to get exposure on the creative writing side of media since all this while i have only been exposed to on-stage work. i was tasked to get responses/opinions from our students about various happenings in our school such as the changes made to the school field, what they think about the music being played during recess etc. i took advantage of my social skills to interact with the students. one semester produced one issue. hence, i was the editor for both semesters.

Leadership Roles

throughout my life i have always been told that i have the potential to lead. i distinctively remember the first time i realized my potential – it was during my primary 5 camp when i was chosen as the best Female camper because of my resilience and the leadership skills i displayed during those 4 days and 3 nights. i was elected as captain of the term a couple of times in primary school and my leadership journey continued in secondary school when i was appointed the vice chairperson in secondary one and secondary three. on top of that, in secondary three i was also appointed as my CCA’s chairperson. juggling two appointments at one sitting enabled me to push me to beyond my limits. although there were certain obstacles i struggled to overcome, i managed to pull through with all the support i have received from my teachers, friends and family.

Achievements

overtime i learnt that good grades and top scores are not as easy as i thought it was to achieve. there were multiple times i felt demotivated to work towards a certain subject/score if i do not manage to achieve my desired grade. but i realized that the more important thing was to have progress. although it may not seem huge, little progresses i make mean a lot to me as i would use them to push me forward. i was awarded the Edusave Good Progress Award in 2017 and 2019 in recognition of my academic progress and effort. these encouraged me to spur on for my academics.

i also went on to help my CCA achieve a Certificate Of Accomplishment at the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation in the year that i was appointed Chairman of the CCA.

Public Speaking

Experiences like being an emcee and presentations in front of my classmates have allowed me to improve on myself, in terms of attitude and ethics. For example, to overcome stage fright, I gave pep talks to my cast members so as to also remind myself that everything we have rehearsed for has led up to that moment. From there, I gained confidence to perform my utmost best. I believe I have grown as an individual through my numerous experiences being on stage. i also intend to make an impact on society by making a difference using the platform i will build with the key values that i strongly hold on to including compassion, empathy and optimism.

in 2019, when i attended the MOE Outward Bound Singapore Camp, i was greatly inspired by my instructor which educated us about climate change and how the human race has changed in terms of attitude etc. i was invited to give a speech on my experience during the camp. i decided to also include what i wish to advocate about using the platform i was given in hopes that the little action i made can create a huge difference.
